HEMATURIA
GENERAL INFORMATION
Hematuria is the presence of blood in the urine. This may be visible (discoloured urine) or invisible (detected with a dipstick test by your doctor). Hematuria can start from any site along the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and urethra.
SYMPTOMS
- Passing reddish or brownish coloured urine
- Passing clots in the urine
- Frequency, urgency or pain with urination
COMMON CAUSES
- Infection in the bladder (cystitis), kidney (pyelonephritis) or prostate (prostatitis)
- Stones in the kidney, ureter or bladder
- Cancer in the bladder, prostate or kidney
- Enlarged prostate (BPH)
- Medical kidney disease (glomerulonephritis)
- Bladder inflammation induced by radiation, drugs or chemicals
- Injury or trauma to the abdomen
- Prostatitis (prostate infection)
- Vigorous exercise
DIAGNOSIS
- Medical history
- Physical examination
- Blood Tests
- Urine Tests
- CT scan of the kidneys and ureters
- Cystoscopy – a minimally invasive procedure to visualize the bladder lining
TREATMENT
The most important aspect of treatment is to diagnose any treatable conditions or serious causes as listed above. If there is associated pain, it is more likely to be associated with conditions such as infection, stones or injury. If it is painless and persistent blood loss, it is important to exclude an underlying abnormality such as cancer with a CT scan.
